THE AMERICAN qualifiers will be put on by Better Barrel Races or BBR. The BBR has grown from its original 1,800 members in 2003 to its approximately 8,000 members today. Better Barrel Races now sanctions more than 1,500 independently produced events in five designated regions across the United States. Over the past ten years the BBR has awarded more than $4 million in cash and prizes, making it the largest and richest divisional barrel race in the world.
There will be 5 qualifiers nationwide. We will be taking the top ten finishers from each qualifier to the Semi-Finals at Mesquite the week prior to THE AMERICAN. Following are some key points that sum up the qualifiers:
Semi-Finals: Mesquite, Texas
The Semi-Finals will be held one week prior to THE AMERICAN at Mesquite Arena. This event will consist of 50 contestants from the qualifiers, the BBR World Champion and the possible Exemption Match or Exemption contestant. These individuals have already paid their $500 entry fee at the qualifiers, so there is no entry fee. Not including the possible Exemption contestants, 51 contestants will run one slack run, and then the top 20 finishers from that round will be split into two performances. One performance will be Saturday at 7 PM and the second will be Sunday at 2 PM. After those 20 individuals run in the performances, along with the possible Exemption Match or Exemption contestant, the top 10 times and the possible Exemption Match winner, or Exemption contestant, will solidify their spot in THE AMERICAN.
The pay-out at the Semi-Finals will come from the other 25% of the $500 entry fee that the contestants paid at the qualifiers. There will be no round money paid, only average money.
Every event has the right up to 2 exemptions that can be made by THE AMERICAN committee.
If two contestants are selected there will be an exemption match between the two at the Semi-Finals in Mesquite. The winner of this match wins an automatic bid into THE AMERICAN, making the field 16 teams.
If one contestant is selected they have the opportunity to compete at Mesquite and THE AMERICAN.
The BBR 2013 World Champion will receive an invitation directly to the Semi-Finals, but if he or she competes in the qualifiers, their invitation is revoked. This contestant must finish in the top 5 at the Semi-Finals to move on to THE AMERICAN.
Exemption contestants must pay the $500 entry fee.
THE AMERICAN will consist of the top 10 barrel racers in the world free of entry fees, as well as, the 10 contestants that qualified through the Qualifiers and Semi-Finals, and the Exemption or Exemption Match winner (making a field of 21). THE AMERICAN will be two runs. All 21 competitors will have one run, with the top 4, after that run, moving on to a shootout round that will determine the champion and reserve champion (one run determination, not average on 2).
The champion will win $100,000 and the reserve champion will win $25,000. In the case that the champion came from the "not" top-10, they will place themselves in a pot for the chance to win $1,000,000.
All BBR rules apply. (May be viewed upon request)
If the BBR World Champion prefers to compete in the qualifier events he/she can, but will no longer be eligible for exemption.
No age or gender requirement.
Contestants entering more than once at the qualifiers must do so on different horses. If a contestant happens to qualify for the Semi-Finals 2 times, they will need to do so on a different horse. A contestant cannot qualify more than once on the same horse.
If a contestant declines a top 10 invitation, they are not eligible to compete in any event of THE AMERICAN.
If an event has an exceptionally low number of entries, THE AMERICAN committee may limit the number of qualification spots given at that particular event.
All contestants must wear "rodeo attire" at every AMERICAN event (Qualifier, Semi-Finals, and THE AMERICAN).
Any further rules that are not addressed will be resolved by the decision of THE AMERICAN committee.
Every contestant must pay the entry fee at each particular event before they can enter THE AMERICAN side-pot
THE AMERICAN management has final decision.
