California Country chronicles the Golden State’s shining stars
Spend some time watching California Country and you will find a fast-paced look at subjects important to us all- the food, wine, flowers and fiber grown in the state and enjoyed far and wide every day.
California Country is a weekly, 30-minute show that educates and entertains viewers about the people working hard behind the scenes that have made this state the most productive food producer in America for more than 50 years in a row.
California Country (www.cacountry.tv) is the latest production in a television commitment by the California Farm Bureau Federation that began more than 40 years ago. It has been on RFD-TV since the network began, and has generated thousands of responses from viewers in all 50 states and Puerto Rico.
The program puts a face and voice to rural California, by profiling their work in an exciting, dynamic way. Stories cover the gamut of how food gets to your table, from harvest through application, provided by some of California’s most talented chefs.
Executive Producer Rosanna Westmoreland says that California Country is Farm Bureau’s most effective tool to get people excited and aware of the value and source of their food. She adds the more people learn about California’s family farms and ranches, the more appreciative and supportive they will be.
Viewers each week watch stories from Jim Morris, Tracy Sellers and Jennifer Harrison.
Jim has worked with the Farm Bureau since 1990, and, during that time, he has profiled more than 1,000 farmers, ranchers, food executives and chefs. He says it’s fun and a privilege to bring their story to the general public.
Tracy has reported on the show since 2003, and brings energy, enthusiasm and depth to her reports.
Jennifer has provided stories for more than two years, and has delighted viewers by bringing out the best of her subjects.
Scott Monaco produces the program, a role he has done since joining the Farm Bureau 17 years ago. His skills as an editor, and the use of music and creative shots, have helped the program win numerous awards over the years. Todd Popple does post-production work on the show, adding the necessary finishing touches to each episode.
Assisting with production are Ron Miller and Janet Classen, while videographers Kevin Burke, Jeff Dethlefson and Scott Cramer help capture all of the action.
The entire ‘California Country’ staff enjoys a great deal of camaraderie and fun in traveling far and wide throughout the state. The collective goal is to tell the farmer’s story in a fresh and exciting way, and to ensure the message is delivered in a way that is interesting and has value to the urban viewer.
The results have been overwhelmingly positive, as each week, about 150 viewers call and e-mail favorable comments and questions about the stories. Many viewers have received a complimentary copy of California Country magazine and become subscribers to this bi-monthly publication with a similar approach to the television show. The California Farm Bureau also produces California Country magazine.
There have been more than 2,200 episodes of California Country. The show was originally known as The Voice of Agriculture when it was created in 1964, but produced changed the name in 1996, to add to the appeal of urban viewers and mark an exciting new direction.
In addition to RFD, about 200 television and cable stations in California and Arizona carry the show.
