Ms. Lucy's Classic Cajun Cooking
Ms. Lucy hails from Gueydan, Louisiana, where she was born and raised. There she learned to cook like her mother and grandmother. Her parents, Elbey and Eloise Henry, lived on a rice farm. She grew up in a typical Cajun home. They worked hard, ate hearty meals and experienced the “joie de vie.” Ms. Lucy married her high school sweetheart, Harry Zaunbrecher, continuing the lifestyle she had previously known. Later on, Ms. Lucy was transplanted to Northeast Louisiana, a new experience for her. Several friends who had enjoyed her meals encouraged her to document the wonderful heritage she possesses. Her first cookbook depicted all her joys and loves of cooking. Through this book came the production of the greatest cooking show in the nation. The book became “live on tape” as Ms. Lucy shares the great products and commodities of Louisiana with her viewers. Her loving and dynamic personality makes her trips throughout Louisiana and her preparation of these in her kitchen a joy. Ms. Lucy loves to cook and she loves people, which makes it so easy for her to “visit” with her viewers. Ms. Lucy produced her own show in 1996, which she filmed in a friend’s home in Monroe, Louisiana. After 26 episodes, she had her own studio kitchen at home in Jones. She aired her show statewide and it was a great success. Louisiana Public Broadcasting recognized the beauty of Ms. Lucy’s classic Cajun culture and cooking show. It was aired statewide and nationwide on Public Broadcasting. LPB, in conjunction with Ms. Lucy, produced 13 new episodes depicting Ms. Lucy’s Cajun lifestyle. Ms. Lucy’s granddaughter, Lucy Suzanne, appears on several of the shows, having grown up in the kitchen with her grandmother. Their love of cooking and the love they share for each other is obvious to all. Many viewers throughout the United Stated have written Ms. Lucy expressing their appreciation for the show, loving the stories she shares and the home-style dishes she prepares in a very easy manner. Through Louisiana Public Broadcasting and RFD-TV, Ms. Lucy has been able to share her precious heritage, which is her biggest and most desired goal.
