For eleven seasons a small but very dedicated production team have been making an agricultural television series, covering all sectors of the primary industry in New Zealand. Rural Delivery is funded completely by the government agency NZ on Air, allowing it to be editorially independent.
For those that may not know it, New Zealand is a very small country of around 4.5 million people (and 30 million sheep) found way down in the South Pacific Ocean. Some people even say that New Zealand is the full stop at the bottom of the world! Partly because of its isolation, New Zealanders have become innovative and resilient in farming, and Rural Delivery takes great pride in showcasing these individuals. New Zealand’s best known export is probably its scenery as seen in the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit blockbusters, but its rural enterprises are less well known. As a developed country, New Zealand is unusual in that 40 percent of it exports come from the agricultural sector. We produce way more than we can eat!
The Rural Delivery program reflects New Zealanders passion for the environment and conservation, whether it is cropping, sheep and beef, dairy, deer, pigs, viticulture, horticulture or aquaculture. At the end of the day, these farmers are business people dedicated to looking after their stock and producing top quality, healthy food for the world while leaving their land in better shape that when they started.
Rural Delivery is a magazine style show, so there is something for every viewer. Each episode consists of three or four stories from the broader primary industries – stories of innovation, research and development from New Zealand’s government research organizations, private enterprises, and public/private partnerships working together. We also profile high performing, award-winning farmers. In addition to that, we cover stories of added value products such as wine, textiles, and neutraceuticals. Everything from precision agriculture to artisan cheese-making is covered in this series. For over a decade, the Rural Delivery team has been covering stories from the far north to the far south of New Zealand’s two main islands – from rugged west coast beaches to the Canterbury plains where cropping and dairying co-exist. From grass-fed beef in Northland to prawn farming in geo-thermal pools in Taupo.
Rural Delivery is delighted to supply a “best of” International series of the show to RFD-TV in the hope that American farmers will enjoy viewing the New Zealand stories of innovation, excellence and consumables that we produce “down under”.
