NASHVILLE, Tenn (RFD-TV) Country Music legend Merle Haggard passed away on his 79th birthday, following a battle with pneumonia. Throughout a career spanning six decades, he racked up an impressive 38 Number One hits (putting him in company with the likes of The Beatles, Elvis Presley, and Michael Jackson) and multiple industry awards.

Early in his career, Haggard was one of the creators of the so-called “Bakersfield sound” characterized by a genuine and unadorned approach to recording. This bucked the trend of Nashville's more elaborately produced records and helped Haggard stand-out as a gifted songwriter and vocalist.  Haggard was a member of both the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame.

RFD-TV expresses deepest condolences to Mr. Haggard's family for their loss.
