Iowa Man Auctions of Lots of Green

Iowa Man Auctions off Lots of Green

June 16, 2016

John Deere tractors are some of the most cherished and sought after collectibles in the U.S., due to the nostalgia they represent, and as the saying goes, "Nothing runs like a Deere." There are thousands across the country who collect John Deere tractors and memorabilia.

Under the hot Iowa sun, hundreds gathered last weekend in a field of green – John Deere Green, that is. Over the course of two days, dozens of John Deere memorabilia and collectors items – from signs and toy tractors to twenty-six John Deere tractors – were sold to the highest bidder at a very special auction.

Dwayne Sunberg, the farmer and John Deere enthusiast who put the auction said, "I'm 78 years old. I put the collection together; I'd like to see it sell."

But these aren't just your typical tractors. These are classic John Deere two cylinders from the 1950s that have been lovingly restored to look and drive "showroom new." Sunberg takes pride in this. "They're totally finished. Write the check, ride 'em home, and they're ready."

The farmer got hooked on buying and fixing up tractors when he bought an A19-59 model 530 fixer upper. HIs life has been changed since then. "Well I thought I was only going to buy one," he said with a laugh.

Fast forward eighteen years and Sunberg's collection had grown to twenty-six lovingly restored John Deere tractors, all made before 1960.

So over the course of two days, one by one, from the smallest pieces of his collection to the mint-condition tractors themselves, everything was sold. A collection that took 18 years to build is now nothing but memories that will last a lifetime. Sunberg said last weekend's auction far exceeded his expectations. After twenty bids, one 1960 model 830 diesel tractor sold for $27,000. The auction attracted on-site bidders from Pennsylvania and Canada and online and by-phone bids from as far away as South Africa, Brazil, and France!
