GMO Labeling Deal Reached

June 24, 2016

After working on a deal for months, lawmakers came to an agreement on GMO labeling. Senators from the Committee on Agriculture proposed bipartisan legislation to create the first-ever nationwide label for foods containing genetically modified ingredients. The measure would give the USDA power over regulation of three labeling options.

These include: a phrase indicating the product contains genetically modified goods, an on-pack symbol, or a QR or bar code, which consumers could scan with their smartphones.

The bill is expected to go before the full senate next week.
