The Calgary Stampede Cowboy Up Challenge

The Calgary Stampede Cowboy Up Challenge

July 12, 2016

Nashville, TN

The Calgary Stampede is known for its rodeo and chuckwagon races, but in the stampede's recent history, another event was added to salute the cowboy heritage. The Calgary Stampede Cowboy Up Challenge is an equestrian sporting event that showcases both horse and rider as they maneuver through multiple obstacles. This year's champion is Jim Anderson and his horse, Marilyn Monroe. The mare went out with a bang as this was her last career ride.

Each obstacle demonstrates both the rider's horsemanship skills and the horse's athletic ability. This event, sanctioned by the Craig Cameron Extreme Cowboy Association, is the richest and most attended extreme cowboy race in the world. There is a $25,000 purse going to the winner of the sudden death finals. This is an invitational competition limited to 10 elite riders selected to compete in the three-day event, which took place from July 9th through July 11th.
