RFD-TV on the Road: Panama Canal and Costa Rica

Panama Canal Panama Canal

August 8, 2016

Agriculture is a worldwide player and the United Soybean Board and RFD-TV wants to show you the broad scope of the industry. Over the next few days, we'll take you from Panama to Costa Rica.

Anchor Janet Adkison and the ten farmers that are accompanying her on this trip, first stopped at the newly expanded Panama Canal. The canal is now deeper and wider and can hold the same size ships as the Suez Canal.

After visiting the canal, Adkison visited Martec Co in Costa Rica, a fish farm. Bob Mills, the CEO and President of the company started it in 1980 as a commercial fishing and boat building business. Now the company processes 10,000-35,000 pounds of fresh fish daily, including tuna, mahi-mahi, and swordfish. They export to the U.S. daily.

Janet then took viewers to a soybean crushing plant which produced almost 10% of the soybean products exported to North and South America in 2015.   In 2015, about 10% of the soybeans exported from the U.S. came into that market.

Luke Crawford, an Illinois soybean farmer on the trip describes it as a “life-changing” experience.

RFD-TV will be on the road all week, so be sure to follow RFD-TV on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram for additional live reports and behind the scenes content.
