Team USA’s 800m runner, Clayton Murphy, has rural roots.

Before participating in sports, Clayton raised, showed, and sold pigs at local fairs. His father, Mark Murphy, says, “Clayton loved to show the pigs. And I can tell you, he is just as good a pig salesman as he is a runner.”

The 21-year-old runner hasn’t always had his sights set on running. Murphy started out playing soccer and basketball; after giving those up to concentrate on running, his father was angry but continued to support his son on his runs.

“Clayton’s such a hard worker,” Mark says. “Once he committed himself to running, he would never miss a day.”

Clayton Murphy will run in the men’s 800m on Friday, August 12.
