The still-pending Trans-Pacific Partnership is a deal that many supporters say is crucial to trade and American's ag economy.  It's become a hot-button topic in this political season, with both democratic and GOP presidential candidates vowing to fight the trade agreement.

But experts say international trade agreements like the TPP provide great benefits to American farmers and ranchers. Those experts worry that the benefits aren't getting the spotlight they need due to the political tug of war.

Tom Sleight is CEO of the U.S. Grains Council. He says the rough political environment for trade means farmers need to be talking about the benefits international trade provides to agriculture.

While trade can sometimes seem far removed from the farm, Tom Sleight says farmers need to understand the impact international trade provides back to their farm. "Trade is a big part of their (farmers) operations," he says.

Sleight says agriculture is the U.S. foreign trade champion and needs to lead trade discussions forward. He says failing to move forward on trade, means the U.S. risks falling behind the rest of the world.
