Porktober

Porktober

October 28, 2016

NASHVILLE, Tenn (RFD-TV) October marks the celebration of many things, from leaves changing, candy collecting, and turkey eating, but one nationally recognized observance takes center stage in the world of agriculture. National Pork Month, appropriately dubbed #Porktober, has become more than just an excuse to flood Facebook with pig selfies or bacon tutorials: social media is playing a key role in the way pig farmers celebrate their curly tailed commodity.

National Pork Month has presented a unique opportunity for pork producers and consumers to interact, inspire, and educate each other about the industry. How are they doing this? Social media.

Consumers continue to have questions about how pigs are raised, and no one knows the answers better than pork producers. The Pork Checkoff’s new social media outreach program is helping real farmers share real stories with consumers through #RealPigFarming. By using this hashtag, consumers are able to research about where their pork is coming from, how the pigs are raised, their living conditions, and the hands involved in the entire production process.

“The Pork Checkoff launched #RealPigFarming to encourage and empower producers and others passionate about pig farming to use social media as a platform for meaningful, impactful conversations with consumers about what happens on their farms,” said Claire Masker, Pork Checkoff public relations director.
