NAFTA Negotiations Continue Through Fourth Round

As these negotiations between the U.S. and Canada regarding the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) continue through round four, there has been no shortage of contentious issues to debate. The dairy industry is taking center stage currently, with the United States requesting stricter transparency rules for Canada’s dairy supply management system.

There has been an air of concern among dairy farmers in the United States, as well as those in Canada, during the negotiations, especially with President Trump threatening to pull out of the agreement. Farmers across both nations rely on NAFTA for the marketing of their products and for maintaining what they feel are fair prices.

These latest negotiations come after the United States pulled away from the Trans-Pacific Partnership earlier this year, a move which cost the U.S. dairy industry the access it had managed to gain into the Canadian market over the past couple of years, as part of that agreement.
