Oscar-nominated actress Diahann Carroll dies at 84

Tony Award winner and Oscar-nominee Diahann Carroll has died at the age of 84.

Carroll was the first black woman to star in a non-servant role in a TV series when she played Julia Baker in “Julia,” a sitcom about a nurse whose husband died in Vietnam. The show ran from 1968-1971.

She also starred in the musical “No Strings” and the movie “Claudine.”

Carroll died in Los Angeles of cancer, according to her daughter.
