The pork industry is celebrating a win as India agrees to U.S. pork purchases for the first time.
A new agreement with India removes a trade barrier after the details were worked out during a trade policy forum in November.
USTR Katherine Tai says that her office will continue working to strengthen that relationship. The U.S. Meat Export Federation and National Pork Producers Council are both excited about the opportunity, saying that it sets the stage for larger trade talks.
The move was a long time in the making.
Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack says, “This new opportunity marks the culmination of nearly two decades of work to gain market access for U.S. pork into India-- and it signals positive movement in U.S./India trade relations.”
