A Safe, Stable and Secure Food Supply: Priorities for the 2023 Farm Bill

The next Senate Agriculture Committee Farm Bill hearing takes place Thursday.

The meeting will cover crop insurance as well as commodity programs. Senator Chuck Grassley out of Iowa plans to advocate for a stronger farm safety net for producers.

“As we develop the Farm Bill, I want to protect the farm safety net to ensure the United States has a safe, very stable and very secure food supply. As you may recall, the 2018 Farm Bill did not include my amendment enacted common sense payment limits. In fact, the 2018 Farm Bill made the problem even worse, as it stands now. Can you believe this more than 70% of the subsidies from Title One programs go to the largest 10% of the farmers,” says Senator Grassley.

At the hearing, he plans to discuss a recent Government Accountability Office Report to review where the funding is going and how to better the safety net in this legislation.
