California is looking to cap emissions at two major ports

Environmental regulators in California could soon cap emissions at some of the state’s largest shipping ports, a move that ag groups have been fighting for, but has been pushed back several times.

South Coast Air Quality Management District first proposed the cap in 2023, and it was pushed back until August of this year, but a delay in writing the regulations caused another setback. Ag groups are asking to meet with California Governor Gavin Newsom over the proposed regulations.

Groups argue the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles bring in $50 billion of economic input each year. Shipping groups say they have already made great progress over the years reducing emissions.
