California wants to replace the “sell by” dates on food packaging

As much as 40 percent of the U.S. food supply goes to waste each year, and it is a statistic California lawmakers are trying to change.

Their plan aims to ‘sell by’ dates listed on products. California lawmakers hope to replace it with ‘best if used by’, or just ‘use by’ dates. They say ‘sell by’ dates are only for grocers, and often lead to consumer confusion.

Lawmakers have sent the bill to Governor Newsom’s desk. If he signs it, analysts with AgriPulse say it could open the door for Congress to pass a similar federal law.
