Congressman calls the Pure Prairie Poultry mishap “inexcusable”

Lawmakers are working to get to the bottom of the Pure Prairie Poultry mishap. One Wisconsin Congressman calls the whole situation inexcusable.

“The USDA has completely blown off Congress. It is inexcusable that they do this. So, I am a member of Congress. I’m a member of the co-equal branch of government, and the USDA is responsible for giving about $50 million to a company that had failed several times before. They failed one more time, and we had about 3.5 million birds that were hanging out there in the lurch, of which the ones in Iowa and Minnesota were euthanized. And fortunately, our (Wisconsin) farmers were able to distribute the birds, their flocks, to folks. So, it is completely unacceptable,” said Congressman Derrick Van Orden.

When talking about the upcoming changes at USDA, Van Orden did not mince any words. He said he is glad that Secretary Vilsack will soon be leaving the department.
