Counting on Science: When corn farmers expect an answer on biotech corn to Mexico

The ag industry could soon have answers surrounding Mexico’s ban on biotech corn. A decision is now expected from the USMCA dispute panel before the year is over.

USDA’s Alexis Taylor says they are counting on the panel to back their decision with science.

“The principles that the global trading system has been built upon, science-based, rules-based transparent regulatory systems. And so it’s important not just, I think, for our corn exports, for the use of these technologies bilaterally, but also I think how global trade is going to continue to operate going forward.”

U.S. ag officials are eager to get the panel’s ruling, but there is a new hurdle in this battle. Mexico’s new president has said in recent months that Mexico will not allow the planting of GMO corn. In addition, the country’s Secretary of Agriculture says no genetically modified corn will be planted or consumed by humans.
