Animal health experts here in the U.S. are closely monitoring a virus that is affecting countries across the Pacific.
Japanese Encephalitis Virus, or JEV, is a mosquito-borne virus that affects hogs, birds, and humans according to officials at the Swine Health Information Center. Right now, there is an active outbreak in Australia but there are no reports of the virus here in the United States.
Animal health officials there are currently working on a vaccine for pigs but that rollout is still months away.
Health officials here are evaluating all possible options should that virus make its way into the United States.
