Persistent drought and dry conditions have left Mississippi River levels in decline

This morning’s latest U.S. Drought Monitor shows persistent drought across parts of the country.

Very little precipitation fell, leading to another week of declines for the eastern portion of the U.S.
In Ohio, moderate to severe drought conditions are still spreading. Areas in the west have also missed out on any meaningful precipitation leading to dropping water levels and drying soils.

Dry conditions have also left Mississippi River levels in decline. It is a sore sight for farmers and grain shippers as fall harvest ramps up.

Conditions in the lower Mississippi are especially dire near Memphis where water levels are minus seven feet below zero.

Dredging is currently underway in that area, helping to create channels for barges to safely pass through. Barge lines and farmers are hopeful Hurricane Francine will bring relief.
