Champion steer wrestler Scott "Ote" Berry to compete in The American

Four-time World Champion Scott "Ote" Berry accepted an exemption invitation to compete at RFD-TV's The American, presented by Polaris Ranger.

The Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame inductee will participate in steer wrestling this March and compete for a share of $2 million, the richest one-day rodeo payout in the history of the sport.

"Steer wrestling was kind of, yeah, always the event for me. I even tried some riding events when I was younger and knew that wasn't for me, just from the fact that I wasn't always good at it. But, the steer wrestling has always kind of been my event. My dad taught me and my brothers how to do that and he was kind of, that was kind of his specialty. It was just something I probably worked at more and just got connected with some of the right people. It's probably one of the easier events to get into. You don't have to have so much equipment and you can borrow a horse. A lot of steer wrestlers don't even own their own horses, they all ride somebody else's. That's probably the most natural event for me."

Berry is the fourth athlete chosen to take one of the limited exemption spots.

"The American's a great event, just to, maybe, put a little more spotlight on rodeo. Rodeo to us has always been a great sport to the rural families and farm and ranchers. But maybe this will probably spotlight it up there. Rodeo probably hasn't grown as much as a sport as some of our other sports and maybe this will give it a little more national attention. It's a one-day, richest rodeo. It means a great deal to me to get to come back and compete. Hopefully, my name will lend something to this. I would have loved to had this, something like this going on back in my prime. I'd of loved to have some 50-year-old man come try to beat me, but that's what I'm going to be doing, trying to beat the kids. I know it's going to be an uphill battle. It's going to be tough to do, but I'm going to give it my best shot and see what happens," Berry said.

He joins 11-time Barrel Racing Champion Charmayne James, 2-time PBR World Champion Justin McBride and 7-time World Champion saddle-bronc rider Dan Mortensen.
