USDA Secretary Vilsack announces another step forward in farm bill implementation

September 26, 2014 WASHINGTON, DC (RFD-TV) In a conference call with reporters this week, USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack announced the department is taking another step forward in farm bill implementation.

"We will begin making available the Agricultural Risk Coverage and Price loss Coverage modeling program and occasional materials very soon. This coming Monday (9/29) we'll begin the process of implementing this new safety net program," says Vilsack.

The two programs, referred to as A.R.C. and P.L.C, provide a safety net for farmers during difficult times. Vilsack went on to say, "We've seen a substantial drop in some crop prices in the past 10-15 months. It does underscore the challenges farmers have. They are putting a substantial amount of money in the ground when they plant a crop, with no guarantee that they'll actually be able to harvest a crop by weather, or that they'll be able to get a price that is consistent with break-even or profit, that's why we have these programs."

An online tool has been created to help farmers evaluate which program will best suit their needs. Farmers have through early spring to choose the program that works best for their operation.
