National Cotton Council Concerned About Trans-Pacific Partnership

August 13, 2015

NASHVILLE, Tenn (RFDTV) - A potential Trans-Pacific Partnership between the U.S. and countries in the Asia-Pacific region could impact U.S. cotton exports. The TPP trade agreement has the backing of several agricultural organizations, including the Cotton Council.

As government agencies work to reach an agreement, the National Cotton Council is concerned about the "rule of origin" included in any eventual TPP agreement. Currently, the U.S. exports $5 billion of goods to Vietnam every year.  In a post on their website, the National Cotton Council warns if a relaxed rule of origin is drafted, Vietnam could use "Chinese-made components in products that are granted preferential access, and those products will displace products manufactured in the U.S. and Western Hemisphere using U.S. and regional yarns." The end result in this scenario could mean reduced U.S. cotton consumption.
