Returning Champions Discuss How THE AMERICAN Changed Their Lives
January 7, 2016
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (RFD-TV) - RFD-TV’s THE AMERICAN, the world’s richest one-day rodeo, will be here soon. So far, the rodeo has paid out close to six million dollars to winners, and this year’s contestants are preparing to take home a prize. THE AMERICAN has crowned eighteen champions, and a number of them will be returning to defend their champion titles this year.
One of those is Lisa Lockhart, the 2015 barrel racing champion. Lisa and her prized gelding, Louie, took home $100,000 last year. “It’s been a life changing experience for us winning THE AMERICAN. We’ve used the money very wisely and done some special things for our family and for our ranch that we wouldn’t normally have done,” says Lockhart.
Tyson Durfey, the 2014 tie down roping champion, is also returning this year. “I’m looking forward to getting back. I’ve already got one spot secured in the semifinals. Hopefully I go ahead and get my spot at the NFR. We’re good to go.” Durfey decided to take the qualifier route in 2015, aiming for the one million dollar side pot. He just one spot shy of the shootout round. This year Durfey is determined to win it all.
Taylor Price and Richmond Champion, two rookie bareback champs, both look forward to competing this year. Price is “just looking forward to coming back…healthy and ready to compete at THE AMERICAN.” Concerning how winning THE AMERICAN has impacted his life and career, Champion comments “it’s a game changer. I never thought I’d be 22 and building a house. It blows my mind every time I think about it. I’m just excited that there’s going to be another group of people that have that opportunity.” They both hope to maintain their titles in 2016.
With such an impressive lineup of returning champions, this year’s THE AMERICAN is sure to make history. Be sure to watch RFD-TV on February 28 to watch these champions and all of the athletes compete. See more in the video above!
