Cargill: Improving Cattle Efficiency

NASHVILLE, Tenn (RFD-TV) For more than 150 years Cargill Animal Nutrition has worked to constantly improve cattle efficiency.

Dr. Anna Taylor joined us in the Roy Rogers Studio to talk about Cargill and about animal nutrition. Dr. Taylor manages research and development for Cargill’s Beef Innovation Group. Specific challenges that her team has been tackling include improving nutrient utilization within cattle, both beef cattle and feedlot animals.

One of Cargill’s tools which might be of particular interest to cattle producers, according to Dr. Taylor, is their proprietary formulation software, which is used to formulate diets specifically for cattle, according to the desired goals of each individual producer. The company’s laboratory in Elk River, Minnesota, also offers feed sample analysis, evaluating the nutrient content of the feed which producers are providing to their livestock.

Speaking with regard to the importance of efficiency, Dr. Taylor explains: “I think about efficiency in three different ways: health, nutrition, and reproduction. Ultimately, if we can improve the health of animals they will be more productive. And if we can increase reproductive efficiency, where a cow is producing and weening a new calf every year, she will be more efficient in general. And when we look at nutritional efficiency, we want to make sure that we can give that animal the nutrients that she needs to be more efficient. And sometimes, when we can do that nutritionally, we can also impact health and reproduction as well.”
