Bocephus Celebrates a Birthday!

Hank Williams Jr. Hank Williams Jr.

May 26, 2016

Legendary country superstar Hank Williams, Jr. turns 67 years old today!  The multi-talented singer-songwriter is known for his forthright lyrics and songs that celebrate his southern heritage.  Born Randall Hank Williams in 1949, he lost his father, Hank Williams Sr. at the age of three.  In his early years, he carried on his father's musical legacy and made his Grand Ole Opry debut at the age of 11.

As he grew up, Williams created his own sound which was heavily influenced by Southern Rock.  Just as his new musical identity was emerging, tragedy struck when Williams fell over 400 feet down a Montana mountain in 1975.  Williams' injuries were numerous and included a split skull.  Over the next few years, he underwent multiple surgeries and had to re-learn to speak and sing.  His hat, beard and sunglasses became part of his signature look after the accident.

Williams continued to recover and in 1979 he released two career-defining songs -- "Family Tradition" and "Whiskey Bent and Hell Bound."  Both songs are now considered classics and spotlight his genetic propensity to overindulge in country music and strong liquor.

During the 1980's, Williams lived out the hard-partying anthems which fueled his path to stardom. His influence went mainstream in 1989 when his hit "All My Rowdy Friends" served as the theme music for the NFL's Monday Night Football franchise for 22 years.  During his successful career, Williams has sold over 70 million albums and earned six platinum albums and 20 god albums from the RIAA.  His latest album, It's About Time, was released in January of 2016.
