Very Successful Year for Nebraska's Wheat Harvest

Very Successful Year for Nebraska's Wheat Harvest

Wheat harvest wraps up. Wheat harvest wraps up.

August 1, 2016

The winter wheat harvest is all but finished, including in Nebraska and South Dakota, where farmers are well ahead of schedule.

The USDA will release its latest progress numbers this afternoon, but as of last week, Nebraska's harvest was 92% complete.

Scott Moore, a wheat farmer from Bartley, Nebraska says that this year's crop is one for the books. "This is a tremendous year for wheat on yield. Quality is down on protein level because we've had rains, but they also made a lot of grain. It will probably be the best wheat harvest ever. Maybe even once in a lifetime harvest this year."

Protein levels are down, which has traders and millers watching the spring wheat crop, in hopes it will make up for the shortage.

The Wheat Quality Council recently finished their spring tour in the upper midwest and reports that protein levels for the wheat there are expected to range in the mid to high 40s.
