ACM Honors the Greats

September 8, 2016

Stars of the past and present gathered at the Ryman Auditorium for the annual ACM Honors ceremony on August 30 to recognize artists that have made a huge impact on music throughout their careers.

Crystal Gayle was honored with the Cliffie Stone Pioneer Award at the ceremony. The "Another World" singer felt a deep connection with the venue as well. She said, “This venue holds a lot of great memories for me because as a kid I roamed the backstage and I saw so many wonderful entertainers. Of course, I also got to perform on the stage when I was about 16, so that was extra special.”

Tanya Tucker was also awarded the Cliffie Stone Pioneer Award. She said, “It feels really great to be honored like this. I always said that the greatest honor was the fans.” She also credits fans with being the reason she’s back on the road his year.

Another recipient of the award was the Statler Brothers, who have had many hits, including "Flowers on the Wall." The group retired in 2002, but continued to be honored for their musical legacy.

Miranda Lambert received the inaugural Merle Haggard Spirit Award, honoring the late country music star. In her speech, she said, "Merle was one of my heroes. He's the reason I write songs; he changed my life so much."

The country music community has been heartbroken hearing about Glen Campbell’s ongoing battle with Alzheimer’s.  Although the renowned singer could not be there, he received the Career Achievement Award. Also, country stars Keith Urban, Blake Shelton, Dierks Bentley and Toby Keith, joined by two of Campbell’s children sang a medley of his hits including “Southern Nights,” “Gentle on my Mind,” “Witchita Lineman,” and “Rhinestone Cowboy.”

The ACM Honors air on CBS tomorrow at 9 PM ET.
