Number of birds in North America dwindling

Posted: Updated:

An analysis published in the journal Science shows that birds are vanishing from North American skies at a starling rate.

Since 1970, the number of birds in the United States and Canada has fell 29 percent and there are  almost 3 billion less birds in North America than there was 50 years ago.

Grasslands have taken the biggest hit, losing 717 million birds and Western and Boreal Forests have also lost hundreds of millions of birds.

The research has shown "steep losses" in common birds like robins and sparrows and some experts have even begun calling this a "full-blown crisis" because of the importance those birds have on our ecosystem. They control pests, pollinate flowers, spread seeds and regenerate forests.

“It’s not just these highly threatened birds that we’re afraid are going to go on the endangered species list,” Kenneth V. Rosenberg, a conservation scientist at Cornell University told the New York Times. “It’s across the board.”
