Washington State Potato Growers Say the Recent Japan Trade Deal will be Good for Them

Potato growers in Washington state say the recent japan trade deal means good things for them.

Chris Voigt, executive director, Washington state potato commission says “We’re happy, we’re on a level playing field we know we can be very competitive in the Pacific Rim. With this new agreement with Japan, we’re going to match what our competition has, we’re going to be at the same tariff level, and it will be phased down to zero.”

Voigt says despite the trade deal there is still more opportunity for fresh potatoes. And, Japan could be one of the largest markets for U.S. growers if it is freely opened.
