Brazil farmers looking to expand acres in Amazon

Brazil farmers looking to expand acres in Amazon

Posted: Updated:

As a shift in fuel supplies boosts soybean demand in Brazil, growers look to expand acres in the Amazon.

Traders will not buy beans sourced from specific land in the Amazon and are considering expanding the restricted area. Farmers say it is unfair and want the government to lift the ban. Some soy crushing groups warn more Amazon acres could limit sales in European markets where consumers demand more environmental accountability. According to Reuters, the president has not commented but has been vocal about bringing down barriers to economic development in the Amazon.

The administration recently announced it will cancel a 10-year ban on sugarcane farming in the rainforest.
