These are the best stores to buy Thanksgiving Dinner on a $50 budget

Posted: Updated:

Making the holidays merry and bright can add up. Over half of Americans spend a full paycheck on their Thanksgiving and Christmas plans, and food is a big part of that. But if you're on a budget, the American Farm Bureau Federation estimates that you can get a full Thanksgiving meal for under $50. CNBC put that to the test and went shopping at some popular grocery chains to see how far they could make that budget stretch.

Discount grocery chain, Aldi, came in at the most economical store; a full Thanksgiving meal for 8 came in at $34.44. Walmart clocked in with a total of $40.22 and a few more name brand items. At the bottom of the list was Whole Foods, where the $50 budget didn't even cover half of the required items.

The full breakdown is as follows:

  1. Aldi Grocery Total - $34.44
  2. Walmart Grocery Total - $40.22
  3. Trader Joes Total - $66.00
  4. Cosco Total - $73.37
  5. Whole Foods Total - $83.00
