Original Gerber baby Ann Turner Cook turns 93

Ann Turner Cook, more commonly known as the original Gerber baby, celebrates her 93rd birthday Wednesday.

Cook was selected as the face of Gerber's ad campaign in 1928 after her neighbor submitted a simple charcoal sketch of her to the judges. The judges liked the drawing so much that they made Cook the face of the campaign without making any edits to it.

"Her drawing competed with elaborate oil paintings, but the judges fell in love with the baby face Smith drew, and when they chose it as the winner, they insisted that the simple illustration remain a sketch," Gerber's website state. "The image of this happy, healthy baby was soon to become the face that launched a brand, a face recognized and loved across the globe."

Gerber officially trademarked the sketch of Ann Turner Cook in 1931 and her identity remained a secret until 1978. As an adult, Ann Turner Cook became a novelist.
