Doctors warn not to kiss babies over fear of spreading virus

Posted: Updated:

As cold and flu season reaches full swing, doctors say those who may be sick or feel sick should not kiss, make contact or go near infants because fear over transmitting respiratory syncytial virus.

RSV is similar to the common cold but it lasts longer and can be very harmful to babies, especially those under six months.

"People infected with RSV are usually contagious for 3 to 8 days. However, some infants, and people with weakened immune systems, can continue to spread the virus even after they stop showing symptoms, for as long as 4 weeks," the CDC website states. "Children are often exposed to and infected with RSV outside the home, such as in school or child-care centers. They can then transmit the virus to other members of the family."

The spread of RSV can be prevented with general hygiene practices such as washing your hands and covering your nose and mouth when you sneeze or cough. There is currently no cure or vaccine for RSV.
