U.S. organic sales more than doubled between 2012 and 2017 as agriculture sales remained relatively flat, however at $7.3 billion in sales, organic commodities still make up only about 2 percent of all agriculture sales.

According to the USDA, growth in the U.S. organic sector was accelerated because retailers, food manufactures and livestock producers have increased demand.

The top organic producing states in 2017 came mostly from the Pacific Northwest as California, Washington and Oregon all ranked in the Top 5 with California topping the list.

Pennsylvania, Texas, Wisconsin, New York, Michigan, Colorado, North Carolina, Vermont and Iowa made up the rest of the Top 10.
