According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, common grocery store items like eggs, meat and baked goods have seen their largest month-over-month spike in price since February of 1974.
Overall, American consumers paid about 2.6 percent more for groceries in April than they did in March.
Egg prices rose 16.1 percent in the month of April compared to march and animal proteins as a whole increased by 4.3 percent. Baked goods were up 2.9 percent month-over-month while fruits and vegetables were up 1.5 percent.
Supply chain issues and increased demand are sighted as reasons for the price increases.
