California’s Prop 12 under challenge from ag groups

A challenge to California’s Prop 12 could appear before the nation’s highest court.

The North American Meat Institute is asking the Supreme Court to review the law — which requires meat producers, nationwide, who sell their products in California to comply with its animal housing standards. At question is if the U.S. Constitution permits California to extend its police power beyond its borders.

The National Pork Producers Council & The American Farm Bureau are also fighting Prop 12 in the courts.
