The Grand Canyon will host an effort to thin out its bison herd.
The National Park Service says that reducing herd size will help protect ecosystems, so it opened the rare opportunity for skilled shooters. If you are chosen, you will have to carry the meat out on foot without the help of motorized transport or pack animals.
Some environmentalists have warned the move could set a dangerous precedent. More than 45,000 people have applied. Hunters who are selected, via lottery stile, will be announced May 17th-- one week from today.
