India urges farmers to call off mass protest, as COVID fears swarm

India’s government wants farmers to call off a huge protest this week to keep the coronavirus from spreading.

Harvest season slowed protests recently, but now they are ramping up again. Groups were planning more demonstrations this week, but authorities are worried it will be a super-spreader event.

Last week, the country recorded 300,000 COVID-related deaths. Since December, tens of thousands of farmers have been camping out in the capital to protest the new farm laws.
