Vilsack: USDA focused on making the cattle market fair for producers

Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack says that his department is focused on making the cattle market fair for producers.

He says that any changes to the rules need to be fair and clear.

Right now livestock producers really only have two or three main buyers, leaving them with very few marketing options and no bargaining power.

At a hearing last month, the U.S. Cattlemen’s Association told Congress what the industry is looking for.

“American cattle producers don’t want, nor are we looking for a handout,” Justin Tupper, the association’s VP, states. “We just want a fair and equitable playing field, staffed by a referee, with a whistle and a flag.”

Sec. Vilsack recently announced efforts to increase market transparency and help smaller processors expand.
