The poultry industry has now lost nearly three million birds due to highly pathogenic avian influenza. The disease has been confirmed in more than a dozen states in the last month and is now spreading in the Midwest.
During the 2015 outbreak, more than 50 million birds died.
That drove up egg prices and led some countries to ban U.S. poultry imports.
The U.S. exports 16 percent of its poultry.
