HPAI is now in half of the United States

Nearly half of the U.S. has now been hit by high path avian flu, and the latest USDA data shows more than 22 million birds have been culled since February.

USDA says that it is looking into a new type of vaccine to protect commercial poultry farms, but it would be too late to stop the current outbreak.

Some producers fear a vaccine would be cost-prohibitive for chickens raised for meat, as they only live five to seven weeks, but the International Poultry Council is reviewing all possibilities.
