Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack is doubling down on his refusal to open CRP acreage for planting this year.
He told the National Grain and Feed Association that only one percent of prime farmland is enrolled in the conservation program.
It was his first response to the request, made by many ag groups and lawmakers to help cover potential shortages from the war in Ukraine. Right now, it is not clear how many acres will be enrolled this year, but 4 million acres are in expiring contracts.
Vilsack says that for now, high prices will motivate farmers to plant more, so there is no need to intervene.
