The Farm Bill will have to wait, some economists believe

Several lawmakers and farm groups have hinted toward another extension of the 2018 Farm Bill. Now, some analysts say that is becoming a near certainty.

Economists with the University of Illinois point to congressional calendars, most of which are closed to new items. Both chambers have submitted frameworks for a new Farm Bill, but none have seen floor time. House leaders have said their version likely would not see any more action before September.

While Farm Bill progress may be slowing down, other ag issues will be taken up this week in Washington. The House Ag Committee will hold two hearings. Tomorrow, the full group will discuss financial conditions on farm country, and on Thursday, a subcommittee will hear testimony on reauthorizing the Commodity Futures Trade Commission.
