The Upper Mississippi River is closed for winter, but the Lower Mississippi is falling again

With transportation issues front and center, one mode is off the table.

The Army Corps of Engineers announced the Upper Mississippi River is officially in hibernation for the winter. The last barge of the year, the Ashley Danielson, left the area and the Corps is moving ahead with scheduled maintenance on several locks.

Officials hope precipitation over the winter will help restore levels along the entire Mississippi River, but the Marine Group warns it could take up to 60 days of normal precipitation to fully recover.
