Trump meets with International Longshoreman’s Association leaders to avoid a shutdown

The ag industry is closely watching developments at our ports today, and so is President-elect Donald Trump.

A strike at some of the largest ports was postponed until next month, and Trump is trying to avoid another shutdown.

On his social media accounts, the President-elect said he met this week with union leaders at the International Longshoreman’s Association. They talked about automation, which has been one of the union’s largest sticking points. Trump says he understands automation but says it does not outweigh the harm of workers losing their jobs.

Trump says dock owners have received record profits, and he wants them to spend those profits on U.S. workers. He said this issue is important to him.

If both sides do not reach an agreement, dock workers will likely go on strike right before Trump takes office.
