West Texas Water Wars: Pecan farm is looking to defend its precious resource

“We want to see year-round protection of the aquifer, which ultimately means a healthy aquifer.”

A water war is underway in west Texas where one pecan-producing family says that their business is at risk.

Belding Farms produces nearly 5 million pounds of pecans each year, but the groundwater they have used since the 1960s is at risk. One of their neighbors, Fort Stockton Holdings is looking to sell its share of the water to west Texas’s growing cities.

Farm Manager of Belding Farms, Zachary Swick spoke with RFD-TV’s own Tammi Arender about long-term consequences, what the operation is hoping for, and the next steps moving forward.
