What is driving an increase in ag import values?

Ag import values have climbed steadily over the last two decades, and economists say there are several driving factors.

In the last 20 years, the value of ag imports to the U.S. grew by around four percent each year. USDA says the increases are because of gains in processed foods, horticulture products, and livestock. Ag imports are set to hit $204 billion this year and could grow to $212 billion next year, and this all comes as trouble brews in the ag trade sector.

The Farm Bureau says U.S. farmers are looking at a $30 billion ag trade deficit this year.
